Gangsters are Leaders

When we think of leaders, people think of Presidents, CEOs, and a slew of other people. But most people's first thought is never gangsters are leaders. To most, a leader is a person who inspires the people around them, a role model whose example people should follow. However, most people would not believe that gangsters are leaders in the traditional sense.

Gangsters are one of the most leadership types of people there are. They start at the bottom of the "workforce" and work their way up. A perfect example of this is Vallon Amsterdam in the movie Gangs of New York. He starts as the low man on the totem pole, but over time, he completes tasks that earn the trust of Bill the Butcher. Therefore, after Amsterdam betrays Bill, Bill gains the ability to lead when he starts his own gang.
Leadership qualities are not inherently found in polished figures that society has dedicated to them. They are found in the rough, where people don't look for them because they have already made up their minds. Leadership is a quality that any head of any organization must embody, and I think gangsters do it best. They are not only running a large operation but also an illegal one. It is hard to run a business in general with the law's help. But to be found on the other side of it makes everything more complicated. They must be smart and practical, teaching the people under them skills not commonly found and serving as a model for them. Being a leader is hard, but some leaders are in places that people never look.
